CHARLESTON,
W.Va. β The West Virginia Department of
Administration has issued the following statement regarding the current work
being performed to repair the Capitol dome.
βTo ensure
the safety and proper completion of the Capitol dome project, the General
Services Division of the Department of Administration has worked closely with
the designer of record, WDP & Associates, since the Notice to Proceed was
issued to the contractor, Wiseman Construction Co., on January 22, 2018. After
extensive discussion over several months, it has been determined that the
method offered by Wiseman Construction through their submittals relating to the
assembly of the exterior scaffolding could not meet the specifications in the
contract.
The particular submittal that caused concern appeared to be
contrary to the requirement that the exterior scaffolding not contact any part
of the dome cladding. This requirement was deemed necessary to prevent any
further damage to the dome. The contractor was unable to assure that the
requirement would be met to the satisfaction of the State and the design
engineer; therefore, with the agreement of both parties, the contract
has been terminated for convenience.
In accordance with state purchasing procedures, the
Department of Administration is working with the second lowest bidder, Pullman
Structural Group, to expedite the completion of this important project. Most
of the work that has already been completed by
Wiseman Construction is expected to remain in place and used by the new
contractor.β
