West Virginia Ethics Commission Issues Public Reprimand

6/1/2017

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Ethics Commission issued today a public reprimand and assessed a fine as part of a settlement agreement with Chris E. Jarrett, the Executive Director of the West Virginia Water Development Authority.

During a meeting on Thursday, June 1, 2017, the Ethics Commission approved a Conciliation Agreement with Jarrett in which he admitted that he had violated the West Virginia Governmental Ethics Act by using his public office for private gain.  The Water Authority, a state agency, leases space in a building it owns to another state agency, the West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council. Between 2013 and 2016, Jarrett stored at least 12 pieces of his personal furniture in an unfinished storage room in the Water Authority’s building which was paid in part by the Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council.

In addition to the public reprimand, the Ethics Commission ordered Jarrett to pay a $2,000 fine and to reimburse the Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council in the amount of $2,500.

The Conciliation Agreement may be viewed on the Commission’s website at www.ethics.wv.gov.
