CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Sights are now being set on the restoration of four flag poles atop the
West Virginia capitol following the re-opening of the Lincoln Plaza earlier this month and the
unveiling of the capitol dome last month. Corrosion of the flagpoles was discovered during the
wrap-up of the dome project, making the repairs necessary.
A steeplejack with Mr. Flagpole Maintenance Company could be seen scaling one of the flagpoles
early Friday, April 16, 2021. A steeplejack is a craftsperson who scales tall structures to complete
maintenance and repair work.
As part of the project, the contractor is scraping off old paint and applying a high-performance coating. While application of the paint will be completed by the end
of the day, the paint will take approximately two weeks to cure.
The flags were detached and stored for safekeeping during the completion of the project and will
fly high again in May, following final inspection and approval of the work. Meanwhile, the flags
near the Veteran’s Memorial and across from the Lincoln Plaza on Kanawha Boulevard will
continue to symbolize our freedom and liberty in their absence, marking the true value of what it
means to be an American.
