WV Office of Technology Recognized for Power Management Initiatives

5/6/2011

The West Virginia Office of Technology (WVOT) is pleased to announce it has recently been selected as a recipient of honorary recognition for its power management initiatives from two technology news companies. Computerworld and InfoWorld each recognized the WVOT in their respective annual awards programs for WVOT’s power management initiatives which are saving the state money and energy.

The WVOT received recognition in the environment category of the Computerworld Honors Program, which recognizes individuals and organizations for “visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.”
The WVOT will be commemorated during the 23rd Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards Evening on June 20 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

InfoWorld sponsors the InfoWorld Green awards program each year to recognize the 15 most innovative IT initiatives that fall under this umbrella of sustainability. The WVOT was named a recipient for the initiative of power management software to save the state an estimated $500,000 per year by 2012. The state is also exploring the use of virtual desktops to reduce energy consumption costs even more. As part of this initiative, WVOT launched a consolidation and virtualization effort, migrating 17,000 of the 20,000 state agency employees from a variety of disparate email systems to a central email environment, resulting in a significant reduction of legacy servers. Both of these award programs recognize private and public sector entities.

“As chief technology officer for the West Virginia State Office of Technology, I am pleased and honored by the global recognition of our efforts by InfoWorld and Computerworld,” said Kyle Schafer.  “Our success is driven by the vision that West Virginia has and will continue to set the bar high for government efficiencies through technology consolidation.  I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Office of Technology staff for making this consolidation a success through its dedication and to the West Virginia Executive Branch agencies we serve for their support and cooperation.”

Founded by International Data Group in 1988, the Computerworld Honors Program is governed by the not-for-profit Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation.
